About Inter-Peace Agency for Sustainable Development (IPASUD – Kenya)

Who We Are
Inter-Peace Agency for Sustainable Development Kenya (IPASUD-Kenya) is a community-based organization rooted in Turkana County, with its headquarters in Lodwar. Established to respond to the pressing challenges of conflict, poverty, and climate change in pastoralist communities, we work hand in hand with the people to create a peaceful and sustainable future.

Our Identity
We are more than an organization — we are a bridge of hope, resilience, and transformation for the Ateker community (Turkana, Karamojong, Toposa, Jie, and Nyangatom) and beyond. With peace building and conflict mitigation as our primary objective, we believe that true development can only thrive in an environment of harmony and security.

Inter-Peace Agency for Sustainable Development (IPASUD – Kenya)

Inter-Peace Agency for Sustainable development is based in Turkana County of north western Kenya and domiciled in Kanamkemer ward of Turkana Central Sub-county. Turkana County borders West Pokot to the south west, Baringo to south east, Samburu and Marsabit to the east.
Externally, Turkana County shares international boundaries with Uganda and South Sudan to the North West, and Ethiopia to the north east. The above countries are inhabited by the pastoral communities who share same culture and tradition of raising livestock and almost share dialect.
Cattle rustling which once used to be a traditional mechanism of replenishing the herds or livestock from other community to facilitate marriage or enrich the families has now graduated into commercial cattle rustling business with patrons that sponsor the activity for commercial gain.

Commemoration of the Ata nayec’e mother of the entire Ateker Community

Every year, communities from across the Ateker region gather in Letea Ward, Turkana West Sub-County, along the Kenya–Uganda border, to celebrate and honor Ata Nayece — the woman who is remembered as the symbolic mother of the entire Ateker. She is regarded as the common matriarch of the Turkana of Kenya, the Karamojong and Jie of Uganda, the Toposa of South Sudan, and the Nyangatom of Ethiopia.

For the Ateker people, Ata Nayece represents unity, shared ancestry, and cultural identity that transcends borders. The commemoration is therefore not only a cultural event but also a peace-building platform that brings together leaders, elders, women, and youth from different nations to celebrate their common heritage.

Livelihood Support & Development

At the heart of our work is empowering communities to build sustainable livelihoods that improve living standards and foster self-reliance. We recognize that poverty, climate change, and limited opportunities often threaten the survival of pastoral, agro-pastoral, and marginalized households. That is why our Livelihood Development & Support program focuses on equipping families with the tools, skills, and resources they need to thrive.

Through training in modern farming techniques, small business development, and climate-smart practices, we help households diversify their income sources and strengthen their resilience against shocks such as drought and economic instability.

Our interventions include:

  • Agriculture & Pastoral Support – Promoting improved farming, livestock keeping, and rangeland management.
  • Entrepreneurship & Small Business Training – Nurturing ideas into viable enterprises.
  • Climate-Resilient Livelihoods – Introducing water conservation, irrigation, and renewable energy solutions.

Climate Change

Farming in our community is not just about producing food – it has become a powerful way of fighting the dangers of climate change. More and more farmers are adopting sustainable methods such as planting trees alongside crops, practicing soil conservation, harvesting rainwater, and using solar-powered irrigation.

These practices protect our land from erosion, improve soil fertility, and reduce the effects of drought and floods. By growing more crops in a sustainable way, farmers are also helping to absorb harmful greenhouse gases, making our environment cleaner and safer.

Through climate-smart farming, families are improving food security, creating jobs, and restoring hope even in the face of changing weather patterns. Farming is now a tool for both survival and climate action – showing that when we care for the land, the land takes care of us.

🚰 Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene practices are the foundation of healthy and resilient communities. Yet, many families continue to face the daily challenge of accessing safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities—leaving them vulnerable to waterborne diseases and poor health. Our organization is committed to changing this reality through community-driven WASH initiatives.

💧 Our Focus Areas:

  • Safe Water Access: Promoting boreholes, protected wells, and
water treatment methods to ensure clean and safe drinking water.
  • Improved Sanitation: Supporting the construction and use of
household latrines, eco-toilets, and community sanitation facilities.
  • Hygiene Promotion: Educating communities on handwashing with
soap, menstrual hygiene management, and safe food handling practices.
  • Community Empowerment: Training local water committees and
equipping schools with WASH facilities to ensure long-term sustainability.
  • Disease Prevention: Reducing cases of diarrhea, cholera, and
other water-related illnesses through awareness and behavior change
    campaigns.

We invite partners, donors, and well-wishers to walk this journey with us. Together, we can build Peace, empower communities, and create a sustainable future for Turkana and beyond.
